Brett’s Fish Farm Mud Pond Project 2008

Koi are kept in mud ponds in Japan to help facilitate their good growth and development. One type of mud pond project is where the hobbiest purchases the young koi from the breeder, then leaves the koi with the breeder for a season’s growth in the breeder’s mud pond. At the end of the growing season the pond is harvested and the fish goes home with the hobbiest, much larger and more beautiful than could have been achieved in a hobby type pond.

Brett’s Fish Farm is offering some very select koi from its production as well as from Dainichi Koi Farm in Japan for just such a project. The price of the koi includes a full season’s growth in a low stocking density mud pond. For more detail, please click here.

Description:
These four sanke are very good examples of akasanke or "red sanke" as they are primarily red in color. The four koi are of seperate styles of akasanke, with excellent examples of sumi and very good sumi placement in each.

Price:
All four for $450

Price includes time in mud pond.

Description:
This is an excellent example of a Dainichi bred showa. A very powerful four step kohaku pattern is offset by the upcoming sumi. Promise of menware (face sumi) is strong and the motoguro (sumi in the pecs) is even and balanced.

Price: $450

Price includes time in mud pond.

Description:
This goshiki has very strong hi (red color) and just a hint of the future reticulation that many goshiki are famous for. A bit of underlying sumi seems to indicate this one might be a "goshiki sanke" a goshiki with sanke type sumi on it. Fabulous, one of a kind fish.

Price: $400

Price includes time in mud pond.

Description:
This kohkau has an ippon hi (straight hi) or one step pattern. The pattern is hanatsuki type with the hi coming almost to the front of the nose, but not quite. Kuchibeni (lipstick) is visible on this koi, a nice addroment. Both eyes are in the white, a big plus for this type of pattern.

Price: $250

Price includes time in mud pond.

Description:
This old style goshiki has strong reticulation and brilliant red set off by the powerful dark background. The black nose is a big plus for this koi. This fish will be a true image of my vision of goshiki, sunset at the end of stormsummer day here on The Gulf Coast. $450, price includes time in mud pond.

Price: $450

Description:
This penultimate example of akasanke (mostly red sanke) has the perfect sumi placement of "stepping stones across a stream." The placement of the white at the tip of the face, with balancing white at the back of the koi, and still more sumi to come in the tail, makes this the akasanke to have.

Price: $300

Price includes time in mud pond.
